Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
